COMMUNITY GARDEN
COMMUNITY GARDEN HISTORY
The Sand City Community Garden, once a vacant lot on Dias Avenue, has been transformed into a a lush, 5,000 square foot public gathering space for growing fresh produce. Initiated by the City in 2011, this community-driven project is a focal point for local activities and received national recognition from President Barack Obama who bestowed the President’s Volunteer Service Award to the dedicated leaders who worked to foster community spirit and provide fresh food for the residents of Sand City. These garden leaders, Susan “Suzka” Collins, Ron Brown, and Don DiFede, received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, which included gold pins, letters of congratulations from the President, and recognition certificates from the U.S. Congress.
State Senator Bill Monning, formerly of the 27th Assembly District, also honored several garden volunteers for their contributions to the community: Gay and Mike Morris, Bob Winkleblack, Caria Martins, Vivian Garcia, Luisa Musni, and Dole Fresh Vegetables of Salinas.
Community gardens have demonstrated benefits such as improved health, food security, green space, and increased property values. Community gardens also enhance community connectivity. They tend to improve the sense of community, and have a positive effect on neighborhoods. Participating in a community garden tends to increase the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables by the individuals and/or family members involved in the garden.
